Best Season
Late spring is the prime window for the Upper Yosemite Falls summit hike, usually April through June, when snowmelt keeps the falls roaring. Early starts matter because the exposed switchbacks heat up fast and the trail can become punishing by midday.
Typical Duration
Most hikers need 5 to 8 hours round trip, depending on pace, photo stops, and trail conditions. Strong hikers can move faster, but the climb is steep enough that most visitors should plan it as a full half-day or longer.
Budget Range
A typical day hike costs USD 25 to 80 per person if you already have park access and basic gear. Add USD 35 to 100+ for park entry, shuttle or transit needs, food, and any last-minute supplies.
Experience Level
This is a hard, strenuous summit hike best suited to fit hikers with mountain trail experience. Expect steep stone steps, sustained switchbacks, sun exposure, and altitude-like fatigue from the 3,900-foot gain.

How To Tackle The Climb

Hike early, especially in late spring when the waterfall is strongest and the temperatures are still manageable. The trail is long and exposed, and starting at dawn helps you avoid both heat and crowds. If you want the best mix of flow and comfort, aim for April, May, or early June.

Treat the route as a serious mountain day, not a casual waterfall stroll. Carry enough water, snacks, sunscreen, and a map or offline navigation, and pace yourself on the long staircase sections. Take breaks at viewpoints, but keep moving steadily because the descent is just as demanding on tired legs.

Wear durable hiking shoes with reliable grip, because loose granite and steep stone steps punish soft soles. Trekking poles help on the way down, and hikers should already be comfortable with sustained climbing before attempting this trail. If you are new to major summit hikes, practice on shorter steep routes first, then build up to Yosemite.

Packing Checklist
