Preparing for Your Starfish Walk

Time your visit to coincide with low tide or the hour approaching low tide, when starfish are most exposed in shallow seagrass beds and sandy flats. Consult local tide charts before departing; during spring tides (near full and new moons), the low-water window extends longest. Early morning departures offer the best combination of calm water and minimal human traffic.

Wear reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide-based, no oxybenzone), water shoes with grip soles to navigate rocky terrain safely, and a wide-brimmed hat for UV protection during extended shoreline walks. Bring a dry bag with a camera, waterproof notebook, and marine identification guide; a polarized snorkel mask greatly improves starfish spotting in shallow water.

Move slowly and deliberately through shallow zones to avoid disturbing sediment; never lift or remove starfish from water, as this causes stress and potential arm loss. If guided by a local naturalist, ask about species identification, feeding behaviors, and seasonal migration patterns. Respect all posted marine reserve boundaries and follow leave-no-trace principles.
