Mastering the Ridge

For the classic Skaros‑style hike, start early in the morning or late in the afternoon to dodge the mid‑day heat and the busiest cable‑car/bus crowds. Early light softens the cliffs and gives you clearer photos; sunset light gilds the caldera and churches but demands arriving 60–90 minutes before dusk to secure a good perch.

Begin in Imerovigli or Fira and walk the caldera path toward Skaros Rock, following signs for the Church of Agios Georgios and Theoskepasti chapel. Stay on the marked stone steps, hold railings where available, and give way to porters or mules on narrow sections; don’t stray onto loose, unstable rocks at the edge.

Choose lightweight trail shoes or grippy sandals with a heel cup rather than flip‑flops, and carry sun protection, water, and a small first‑aid strip. If you’re combining Skaros with a longer caldera route, plan hosts or cafes where you can rehydrate mid‑hike and leave a bit of daylight in reserve for the return walk uphill.
