Build the trip around sunrise and dawn calm, not midday sightseeing. Wind usually drops overnight, so your highest odds for reflection are in the first hour after first light. Use weather forecasts, local lake webcams, and wind reports to choose the best morning before you commit to a viewpoint.
Stay close to the lake for at least two nights whenever possible. Reflection conditions change fast with temperature, cloud cover, and boat traffic, so a second chance matters. Arrive the evening before, scout your foregrounds in daylight, and map out where the sun will rise relative to the mountains or treeline.
Pack for standing still in cold air before sunrise, especially in alpine regions. A tripod, polarizer, microfiber cloth, spare batteries, and weather-sealed footwear do more for your results than extra lenses. Keep your setup simple, explore side coves and jetties, and shoot both symmetrical frame-filling reflections and off-center compositions with foreground texture.
