Arrive during the clearest weather windows and lowest-traffic hours—dawn and dusk deliver mirror-like waters and directional light that sculpts reflections. Research tide schedules, as water levels and sediment suspension fluctuate dramatically and affect both clarity and colour saturation. Book local guides familiar with seasonal conditions and hidden vantage points inaccessible to casual visitors.

Scout locations the day before shooting to identify optimal angles, foreground elements, and potential obstructions. Arrive early to secure positioning, particularly at popular destinations where crowds gather by mid-morning. Bring weather protection—sudden winds, rain, and temperature shifts are common near glaciers and high-altitude lagoons, destroying reflection conditions and threatening gear.

A quality polarizing filter is non-negotiable; it cuts glare, deepens sky saturation, and reveals water clarity beneath surface reflections. Use a sturdy tripod on unstable terrain and consider a wide-angle lens (16–35mm) to capture expansive reflections without sacrificing foreground detail. Practice long exposures in windy conditions to smooth water surfaces and extend shooting windows during midday when contrast is harsh.
