Planning the Deep Route

Book around seasonal visibility, current, and sea-state patterns rather than simply the driest month on land. For wreck-heavy destinations, liveaboard schedules and permit limits can decide whether you see the headline sites or miss them entirely. For cave systems, prioritize sites with clear rules, fixed entry points, and guides who enforce conservative ratios.

Treat wreck and cave travel as precision travel. Bring certification cards, logbook proof, and recent dive history, because many operators screen for depth, overhead, and decompression experience. Build in a first-day check dive and avoid stacking aggressive profiles before your deepest or most complex penetrations.

Own your buoyancy before you chase the signature sites. A low-volume wing, reliable primary and backup lights, cutting tools, reel or spool, DSMB, and an appropriate exposure suit matter more than fashion gear. If you want independent exploration, train first in wreck penetration, navigation, nitrox or trimix as needed, and cave protocols; the best destinations reward discipline, not improvisation.
