Tasting the Road Right

Book ahead for headline distilleries, especially in Scotland, Japan, Kentucky, and Ireland, where the most sought-after tour slots disappear quickly in peak season. Build your route around operating days rather than distance alone, since many rural distilleries close one or two days a week. If your trip includes limited releases or premium tastings, reserve the earliest time slot of the day so your palate starts fresh.

Keep the day balanced: one structured tour, one seated tasting, and one slower meal is a better rhythm than stacking too many pours. Eat before tasting, drink water throughout, and use a notebook or tasting app to track what you liked, because profiles can blur after the third or fourth stop. If a distillery offers warehouse or cask-room access, choose that over a generic shop visit.

Pack for weather, not for glamour, since many top distilleries are rural, coastal, or highland sites with uneven ground and changing conditions. A compact day bag, layered clothing, and a designated driver plan matter more than formal tasting gear. If you want to explore independently, rent a car only where local rules and road conditions make it sensible, and always assign a non-drinking driver or use a licensed transfer.
