Why Visit Yi Peng
Yi Peng is Chiang Mai’s signature lantern festival and one of northern Thailand’s most iconic cultural moments. Rooted in Lanna Buddhist tradition, it transforms the old city, temple grounds, and the Ping River corridor into a glowing landscape of candles, processions, and sky lanterns. The most famous time to visit is during the festival period in November, when Yi Peng overlaps with Loy Krathong and the city fills with parades, temple ceremonies, and lantern launches. For the most atmospheric experience, base yourself in Chiang Mai Old City or near Tha Phae Gate, then head to riverfront and temple gathering points after sunset.
