Tiwanaku is Bolivia’s most important pre-Inca archaeological destination, a high-altitude ceremonial city on the Altiplano near Lake Titicaca, about an hour and a half from La Paz. Its power lies in monumental stonework, sacred geometry, and a cultural legacy that shaped later Andean civilizations, including the Inca. Visitors come for the Sun Gate, the Akapana and Kalasasaya complexes, the semi-subterranean temple, and the excellent onsite museum that helps decode the ruins. The best time to visit is the dry season, roughly May through October, when the skies are clearest and the site is easier to explore comfortably at altitude.
