Óbidos is a perfectly preserved medieval hilltop town in Central Portugal, located 85 kilometers northwest of Lisbon, that transports visitors directly into Europe's best-kept medieval past. Encircled by 13-meter-high fortified walls dating back to Roman times and reinforced by Moorish and Portuguese dynasties, this village of 2,000 residents showcases whitewashed gothic houses, baroque ceramic tiles, and cobbled alleyways that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. The town earned its nickname "The Wedding Present Town" after King Dinis gifted it to his bride Queen Isabel in 1282, establishing a tradition of Portuguese queens controlling the municipality for over 500 years and commissioning architectural landmarks like the iconic 16th-century aqueduct. Classified a national monument in 1951 and voted one of Portugal's seven wonders in 2007, Óbidos functions simultaneously as a living village and an open-air museum of Portuguese royal history.
