Why Visit Nyiragongo

**Mount Nyiragongo** stands as one of Africa's most dramatic natural attractions, an active stratovolcano rising 3,470 meters (11,385 feet) within Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu province.[2][7] The volcano's defining feature is the **world's largest active lava lake**, contained within a summit crater approximately 1.2 kilometers wide, which churns with molten red fire and produces visible gas plumes even from the nearby town of Goma.[1][3] Located just 12 kilometers north of Goma near the Rwanda border, Nyiragongo combines geological spectacle with equatorial biodiversity, offering trekkers dense montane forests, ancient lava flows, and the possibility of witnessing lava glow at night.[1][6] The typical trek to the summit takes 4–6 hours from the Kibati Ranger Post, with accommodation available in basic shelters near the crater rim.[1][4] While Virunga National Park operates year-round, the dry seasons (June–August and January–February) provide the most stable trekking conditions and clearest visibility of the lava lake.
