Mokala National Park is a compact, semi-arid safari reserve southwest of Kimberley in South Africa’s Northern Cape, created in 2007 to protect the meeting point of the Kalahari and Nama Karoo biomes. It is best known for its open camel-thorn plains, scattered dolerite hills, and a strong conservation focus, especially on rhino, buffalo, roan, sable, and other reintroduced species. Unlike big-name Big Five parks, Mokala feels quieter, more intimate, and more landscape-driven, with excellent birding, starry skies, and low-crowd game viewing. The best time to visit is generally May to September, when the weather is drier and wildlife is easier to spot.
