Why Visit Meteora

Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage complex of six monasteries perched atop towering sandstone pillars in central Greece, located between the towns of Kalabaka and Kastraki in the Thessaly region[1][3]. Monks first settled the area in the 11th century, seeking solitude in caves carved into the rock formations, and eventually constructed their monasteries beginning in the 14th century[2][4]. The geological formations themselves date back 60 million years, created by seismic activity that pushed ancient seabed upward into dramatic columns of sandstone and conglomerate rock[2][4]. Today, approximately 60 monks and nuns inhabit the active monasteries, which showcase exceptional Byzantine art and serve as the second most important monastic community in Greece after Mount Athos[1][2]. The surrounding region combines spiritual significance with natural beauty, forested mountainous landscapes, and extensive adventure opportunities, making it fundamentally different from Greece's typical island destinations[2].
