Magome-juku is one of Japan’s best-preserved Edo-period post towns, set on a steep mountainside in the Kiso Valley of Gifu Prefecture. Its stone-paved main street, wooden houses, tea shops, soba counters, and viewpoint over the Kiso mountains give it the atmosphere of a living museum rather than a reconstructed theme town. The destination is most famous as the western gateway to the classic Magome to Tsumago hike on the Nakasendo, but the town itself rewards slow wandering, local food stops, and views from the hillside observatory.
