Kaokoland, now commonly referred to as Namibia’s Kunene Region, is one of southern Africa’s last great frontier landscapes. This is a place of stark mountain ranges, dry riverbeds, vast open valleys, and the Kunene River, which cuts through the far northwest to create the green, misty oasis of Epupa Falls. It is also the ancestral homeland of the Himba people, whose pastoral culture, ochre body paint, and village life give the region a rare cultural depth that matches its wilderness. The best time to visit is during the cooler dry season, roughly May to October, when roads are more manageable and wildlife viewing is strongest; the green season from November to April brings dramatic skies, birdlife, and a more vivid landscape.
