Why Visit Isla Santa Cruz
Isla Santa Cruz is the Galápagos Islands’ busiest hub and the place most travelers use as their base for exploring the archipelago. Its character comes from the contrast between Puerto Ayora’s working waterfront, the Charles Darwin Research Station, and the island’s dramatic interior, where cloud-forested highlands, lava tunnels, giant tortoise reserves, and volcanic sinkholes show a very different Galápagos from the classic beach-and-boats image. Wildlife is everywhere, from marine iguanas and sea lions in town to sharks, rays, turtles, and seabirds in nearby coves and islets. The best time to visit is year-round, but the coolest, driest months from June to December are strongest for active wildlife viewing, while the warmer January to May period brings calmer seas and better snorkeling conditions.
