Gion and Higashiyama are Kyoto at its most atmospheric: a dense, walkable district of preserved wooden townhouses, tea houses, temple lanes, shrine gates, and hillside streets where old Kyoto still feels lived in rather than staged. Early morning and evening are the best times to experience the district’s character, especially around Hanamikoji, Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu-dera, and the smaller side streets.
