Flores is one of Indonesia’s most dramatic and varied islands, a place where volcanoes, crater lakes, tribal villages, coral-rich seas, and rugged headlands all compete for attention. Most visitors come for the Komodo region in the west, then stay for the island’s deeper character: the tri-colored lakes of Kelimutu, the hilltop village of Wae Rebo, spider-web rice fields around Cancar, and the strong living traditions of Manggarai, Ngada, and other ethnic groups. The island’s best overall travel window is the dry season from April to October, when roads are easier, boat conditions are better, and visibility for trekking and diving is strongest. For Kelimutu sunrises and marine trips around Labuan Bajo, the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October are especially good.
