Why Visit Ellora Jain Caves

The Jain caves at Ellora are one of India’s most striking rock-cut sanctuaries, carved into the basalt cliffs north of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. This small cluster of five caves, best known for their refined reliefs, pillared halls, and the celebrated Chhota Kailasa and Indra Sabha complexes, shows Jain art at its most elegant and disciplined. Unlike the monumental scale of the Hindu caves at Ellora, the Jain section feels intimate, intricate, and intensely carved, with a strong emphasis on symmetry, ascetic imagery, and devotional detail. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather around the Deccan plateau is cooler and sightseeing is far more comfortable.
