Chan Chan is the vast adobe capital of the Chimú civilization, set just west of Trujillo on Peru’s northern coast. It is the largest earthen city in the Americas and one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites in South America, with giant walled citadels, ceremonial courtyards, niches, reliefs of fish and seabirds, and a desert setting that heightens its scale and silence. The best time to visit is during Peru’s dry season, especially from May to October, when walking conditions are more comfortable and rain risk is lower. Go early in the day for softer light, cooler temperatures, and a better experience among the restored palace complexes and open ruins.
