Kolmanskop

A diamond ghost town famous for sand-filled houses and German colonial architecture overtaken by desert reclamation. It started a diamond rush in 1908 and was abandoned in 1954. Access requires permits, and guided or self-guided tours are available. Photographers love the early morning light. Infrastructure supports tourists with guides available. Best time to visit is sunrise for photography. Located 10km from Luderitz, it also offers special full moon photography tours.

Best visiting times are June to September for boat access, and March to May by snowmobile. Wildlife includes polar bears and Arctic foxes. Weather-dependent access and a northernmost Lenin statue add uniqueness.

It is a State Historic Park with variable road conditions. Infrastructure supports tours and entry fees. Best visited June to October as roads can close in winter. Photography is allowed through windows, emphasizing preservation rather than restoration.

Pripyat

A Soviet planned city frozen in time since the 1986 nuclear disaster, with 50,000 evacuated residents. Key sites include an amusement park, hospital, schools, and a cultural palace. Access is only possible through Chernobyl tours. Iconic imagery includes a Ferris wheel, gas masks, and dolls. The city is rapidly deteriorating and part of the Chernobyl exclusion zone with variable radiation levels monitored by guides. Looting has removed many artifacts. Currently inaccessible due to war.
